Overview

Cowpea is a versatile warm-season legume (pulse) grown for dry grain, tender green pods as a vegetable, and as fodder or green manure.

As a legume it fixes atmospheric nitrogen with Rhizobium bacteria, needing little nitrogen fertiliser and improving the soil for the next crop. It is short-duration and fairly drought-tolerant. Types range from bushy to spreading and semi-trailing. No specific cultivar is named here.

Climate & season

Cowpea needs warm weather (about 25–35 °C) and full sun; it tolerates heat and moderate drought but not frost.

Soil & land preparation

  3. Sow direct on flat or ridges — about 30 × 10 cm for grain, wider (45 × 15 cm) for spreading types, closer for fodder.
  4. Sow at 3–5 cm depth into moisture.
  5. Keep the field weed-free in the first 30–40 days.
  6. Provide light support for trailing types grown for vegetable pods.
Inoculate with Rhizobium: coating seed with Rhizobium just before sowing lets cowpea fix its own nitrogen, cutting fertiliser need — apply fungicide first, then the inoculant, and keep it out of the sun.

Water management

Cowpea is largely rainfed in the kharif season but responds to irrigation in summer.

  • In the rains, grow mostly on rainfall with drainage in wet spells.
  • In summer, irrigate at sowing and then at critical stages.
  • Most critical stages are flowering and pod filling.
  • Avoid waterlogging — it harms nodulation and roots.

Intercultural & crop management

  • Keep the crop weed-free for the first 30–40 days with one or two weedings.
  • Earth up lightly and mulch to conserve moisture.
  • For vegetable use, pick tender pods regularly to keep the plant flowering.
  • It intercrops well and can be ploughed in as green manure.
  • Protect nodulation by avoiding excess nitrogen and waterlogging.

IPM-first routine

  1. Start with treated, inoculated seed on a well-drained field.
  2. Keep the crop weed-free early and avoid waterlogging.

Harvesting & yield

Harvest depends on the purpose — grain, vegetable pods or fodder.

  • For grain, harvest when pods are dry and mature; dry, then thresh and clean the seed.
  • For vegetable, pick tender green pods every 3–4 days before the seed swells.
  • For fodder or green manure, cut or plough in at about 50% flowering.
  • Dry grain well before storage to avoid bruchid (storage weevil) damage.
  • Typical yield: about 1.0–1.5 t/ha of grain, with higher green-pod or fodder yields.
