Overview

Castor is a major non-edible oilseed crop; its oil is used widely in industry — lubricants, coatings, soaps, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

It is an indeterminate crop: spikes form and mature in flushes, so capsules are picked several times through the season. It is grown both rainfed and irrigated, is drought-hardy once established, but sensitive to frost and waterlogging. Types differ in duration and spike character. No specific cultivar is named here.

Climate & season

Castor needs warm weather (about 20–30 °C) and a long, frost-free season with plenty of sun.

Water management

Castor is drought-hardy but yields far more with irrigation at critical stages.

  • Rainfed in the kharif season; irrigate where water is available.
  • Most critical stages are establishment, spike initiation and capsule development.
  • Avoid waterlogging, which causes wilt and root rot.
  • Reduce irrigation as the main spikes mature for easier picking.

IPM-first routine

  1. Start with treated seed on a well-drained, rotated field.
  2. Keep beds clean and rogue out wilted plants early.
  3. Scout weekly; use pheromone and sticky traps.
  4. Favour natural enemies, neem and bio-agents first.
  5. Use recommended chemicals only at threshold, rotating modes of action.
  6. Pick and destroy borer-infested capsules to break the cycle.

Use crop-protection inputs safely

Wear protective clothing (gloves, mask, full sleeves) while mixing and spraying, and respect the pre-harvest interval before you pick. Spikes are picked in flushes as their capsules mature and dry.

  • Pick each spike when its capsules turn brown and begin to dry, in the cool morning.
  • Harvest in several flushes as successive spikes mature.
  • Dry the capsules, then thresh and clean the seed.
  • For non-shattering types, time picking to reduce seed loss.
