Okra is one of the most traded vegetable seeds from India, and buyers in Africa, the Middle East and Central America look for the same things: dark green, tender pods, close pod set for fast picking, and tolerance to yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV). This guide compares Farmson's okra range and explains how to order seed for export.
What export growers look for in okra
- Pod quality: dark green, smooth, tender pods of the length your market buys.
- Close pod set: pods set close together on short internodes mean faster picking.
- Virus tolerance: YVMV and enation leaf curl virus (ELCV), spread by whitefly, are the main threats in warm regions.
- Earliness: early hybrids reach the market first and pick over a longer season.

Growing basics
Okra is direct-sown. In India the summer crop is sown in February–March and the rainy-season crop in June–July. Indicative seed rates are 8–10 kg per hectare for the summer crop and 5–6 kg for the rainy season, at 45 × 30 cm in summer and 60 × 30 cm in the rains. First picking comes about 45–55 days after sowing. Timings differ by country, so sow to your local season. Full details are in our okra growing guide.
