Overview

Marigold is one of the hardiest and most profitable commercial flowers grown in India. It is raised mainly for loose flowers — used in garlands, religious offerings, decoration and festivals — and also for garden beds, borders and pot culture.

Two broad types are grown: the tall, large-flowered African (tall) type for high loose-flower yield and long stalks, and the bushy, free-flowering French (dwarf) type for borders, pots and bedding. Marigold flowers quickly, tolerates a wide range of soils, and can be grown almost year-round in most parts of the country. Its roots also help suppress soil nematodes, so it is often used as a companion or trap crop.

Climate & season

Marigold grows best in mild, sunny weather (about 15–30 °C) and needs full sun for strong flowering. Very high heat (above 35 °C) reduces flower size and fades colour, while frost damages the crop.

  • Three main planting windows: rainy (June–July), winter (September–October) and summer (January–February).
  • Winter planting usually gives the best quality and longest flowering.
  • Long, very hot dry spells shorten flowering and lower yield.

Soil & land preparation

A well-drained, fertile loam or sandy loam rich in organic matter suits marigold best, at a pH of 6.0–7.5. Waterlogging quickly harms the crop.

  • Plough to a fine tilth and form raised beds or ridges for good drainage.
  • Mix in 15–25 t/ha of well-rotted farmyard manure during land preparation.
  • Avoid low, water-holding patches; ensure surplus rain can drain away.
  • Rotate with unrelated crops to keep soil pests and diseases low.

Choosing a type & seed

Choose the type by purpose: tall (African) types for long-stalked loose flowers and high yield; dwarf (French) types for pots, borders, bedding and as a trap crop. Within each, select for flower colour (shades of yellow and orange), stalk length and earliness. Hybrids give more uniform colour, size and flowering. No specific cultivar is named here.

Seed rate

  • About 1–1.5 kg/ha of seed to raise enough seedlings for one hectare.
  • For hybrid seed (higher germination and uniformity), roughly 400–600 g/ha is enough.
  • Raise seedlings in nursery beds or pro-trays, then transplant.

Seed treatment

  • Treat seed with Trichoderma viride or a recommended fungicide before sowing.
  • Sow shallow on raised, well-drained nursery beds; keep lightly moist.
  • Seedlings are ready to transplant at 25–30 days (3–4 true leaves).

Sowing & spacing

  1. Sow seed thinly in nursery beds or pro-trays; cover lightly and keep moist with a fine rose-can.
  2. Protect the nursery from heavy rain and strong sun; thin crowded seedlings.
  3. When seedlings reach 25–30 days with 3–4 leaves, harden them for 2–3 days.
  4. Prepare the main field to a fine tilth, form beds/ridges and incorporate farmyard manure.
  5. Transplant in the cool evening: tall types about 60 × 45 cm, dwarf types 45 × 30 cm.
  6. Irrigate immediately after transplanting to settle the roots.
  7. Pinch the growing tip at about 30–40 days after transplanting to force side branches.
Pinching pays: nipping out the central growing tip makes the plant bushy and multiplies the number of flowering shoots — one of the simplest ways to lift marigold yield.

Water management

Marigold needs steady moisture but never standing water. Light, frequent irrigation keeps the crop flowering well.

  • Irrigate right after transplanting, then every 5–7 days depending on soil and weather.
  • The most critical stages are early establishment, active growth and the bud-to-flowering stage.
  • Drip with mulch saves water, keeps weeds down and lowers disease.
  • Avoid wetting open flowers; overhead watering in humid weather invites flower rot.
  • Keep good drainage during heavy rain to prevent root and stem rots.

Intercultural & weed management

  • Keep the crop weed-free for the first 30–40 days with 2–3 hand weedings or light hoeings.
  • Earth up around plants after the first top-dressing to support them.
  • Mulch between rows to suppress weeds and conserve moisture.
  • Stake tall types if they tend to lodge under a heavy flower load.
  • Deadhead faded flowers regularly to keep new buds coming.
  • Remove crop debris and rogue out any diseased plants promptly.

IPM-first routine

  1. Start clean: healthy, treated seed and well-drained nursery beds.
  2. Keep the field tidy — remove debris, deadhead, and rogue out diseased plants.
  3. Scout weekly; hang yellow/blue sticky traps and pheromone traps for early warning.
  4. Favour natural enemies; use neem and bio-agents (Trichoderma, Bt) first.
  5. Spray recommended chemicals only when pests cross the threshold, rotating modes of action.
  6. Manage irrigation and airflow to keep flowers dry and cut disease pressure.

Use crop-protection inputs safely

Always read the product label and follow it. Use the correct dose — more is not safer or better. Wear protective clothing (gloves, mask, full sleeves) while mixing and spraying, and respect the pre-harvest interval before you pick. Put IPM and cultural methods first and treat chemical sprays as a last resort.

Harvesting & yield

Flowers are usually ready from about 60–75 days after transplanting, then keep coming for two to three months.

  • Pick fully opened flowers in the cool morning hours.
  • Harvest every 3–4 days during the peak flush to keep the plant productive.
  • Handle gently to avoid bruising; collect in clean, ventilated baskets.
  • Keep the harvest cool and shaded and market it quickly — loose flowers are perishable.
  • Typical yield: dwarf (French) types about 8–12 t/ha; tall (African) types 12–18 t/ha or more of loose flowers across several pickings.
