A long-bearing spice crop that rewards light, steady moisture and disciplined pest scouting — give it too much water and it turns leafy and drops its flowers.

Overview

Chilli is grown for green pods or dried red fruit. It likes warm weather and well-drained soil, dislikes waterlogging, and is most sensitive at flowering and fruiting.

The main battles are sucking pests — thrips, mites and aphids that cause leaf curl — and fruit rot / dieback (anthracnose). Drip irrigation and a steady IPM routine give the cleanest crops.

Climate & season

Chilli grows best at 20–30 °C. It is frost-sensitive, and very high heat causes flowers to drop; bright, dry weather suits ripening and drying.

  • Avoid frost and extreme heat at flowering.
  • Bright, dry weather late in the crop helps fruit ripen and dry well.
  • Long wet, cloudy spells raise leaf-curl and fruit-rot pressure.

Soil & land preparation

A well-drained light loam suits chilli best, at a pH of 6–7. Light soils give better fruit quality than heavy soils.

  • Plough to a fine tilth and form raised beds (~120 cm) for drip.
  • Apply FYM 25 t/ha with Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria.
  • Work in neem cake 100 kg/ha before the last ploughing — it also checks root grubs.
  • Rotate away from other Solanaceae to break pest and disease cycles.

Choosing a type & seed

Choose a type by your end use (green or dry; pungency; colour and oleoresin) and by tolerance to leaf-curl complex, thrips and mites, and fruit rot. Hybrids give higher yields; open-pollinated types let you keep seed. No specific cultivar is named here.

Seed rate

  • Hybrid: 150–200 g/ha
  • Open-pollinated: about 1 kg/ha
  • Raise a nursery and transplant; about 1 g holds 150–200 seeds.

Seed treatment

  • Treat seed with Trichoderma viride 4 g/kg as a bio-fungicide.
  • Then mix with Azospirillum 100 g/kg and shade-dry for about 30 minutes.

Nursery, transplanting & spacing

  1. Raise the nursery on raised beds or in pro-trays; keep moist and lightly shaded.
  2. Transplant at about 6 weeks, in the evening, and water in.
  3. Spacing: 60 × 45 cm on beds, or 45 × 30 cm for a closer irrigated crop.
  4. Gap-fill about 7 days after transplanting.

Nutrient management

Chilli can be grown by drip fertigation or by soil application. Both options below are widely used; fine-tune to your soil test and local advisory.

Option A — Drip fertigation recommended

For an F1 hybrid the dose is N–P–K 120 : 80 : 80 kg/ha, given with water-soluble fertilizers and split once every three days through the crop. As basal, apply FYM 25 t/ha with Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria, plus 75% of the phosphorus as superphosphate (≈ 469 kg/ha); work in neem cake 100 kg/ha before the last ploughing.

Option B — Soil application

  • Basal: FYM 30 t/ha + N–P–K 30 : 80 : 80 kg/ha.
  • Top-dress 30 kg N/ha in three equal splits at 30, 60 and 90 days after planting.
Extras that help: a micronutrient mix (~500 g/ha) at 40, 80 and 120 days, water-soluble 19:19:19 and potassium nitrate (1%) sprays around 60 and 100 days, and Pseudomonas fluorescens 0.5% at 15-day intervals as a bio-fungicide.

Irrigation

  • Irrigate at transplanting, then only when needed — chilli hates excess water.
  • Too much water makes plants lanky and sheds flowers.
  • Flowering and fruit development are the critical stages.
  • If leaves droop by late afternoon, it is time to irrigate; drip is ideal.

Weeds & special care

  • Weed around 30 and 60 days after planting.
  • Mulch conserves moisture and suppresses weeds.
  • A pre-emergence herbicide is an option for large areas — follow the label.
  • Keep the root zone evenly moist to avoid flower and fruit drop.

Plant protection

Work the IPM way — clean nursery, traps, weekly scouting and need-based sprays. Sucking pests and fruit rot are the main targets; rotate chemical groups and follow the label.

Use chemicals safely

The products above are examples, not a prescription. Doses, approved crops and pre-harvest intervals differ by country and change over time. Always read the label, wear protective gear, use the correct dose, observe the waiting period before harvest, protect bees, and confirm with your local agriculture officer.

Harvest & yield

  • Pick green chillies from about 75 days after transplanting; for dry chilli, let the fruit ripen fully red.
  • Harvest in several pickings over many weeks.
  • For dry chilli, dry the red fruit to about 10% moisture until it rattles.
  • Typical yield: green 15–25 t/ha; dry red 2–3 t/ha.

Post-harvest handling

  • Green chilli: keep cool and ventilated; it has a short shelf life.
  • Dry chilli: dry fully in sun or shade, then store dry and airtight.
  • Dry storage is essential — damp chilli grows mould and can develop toxins.
  • Grade by colour and size; remove damaged or mouldy pods.

Field tips that pay off

  • Don't overwater — it is the most common cause of poor chilli crops.
  • Scout for thrips and mites early; leaf-curl is far easier to prevent than cure.
  • Drip + neem routine keeps both water and pests in check.
  • Pick at the right stage and dry red chilli well to protect price and quality.
